Weather conditions made for a great trip to Conneaut today. Less people were on the flats because of the clouds, but it never actually rained much. Low winds made the water on the flats still like glass. Anyway, we were there from around 9:30 - 2:00. Not a huge amount of shorebirds were present, but there were nice finds. My group did not see the Piping plover today (saw it Monday), but I was told it was observed this morning. Highlights: 2-3 Least Bitterns - Really cooperative...posing in the open, flying across the water, vocalizing, etc. Present all day, mostly in the back row of phragmites but sometimes closer. 3 Whimbrels - Flew over low without stopping at 1:45 Also around the flats: 6-8 Semipalmated plovers 6 Semipalmated sandpipers 4 Least sandpipers 2 Lesser yellowlegs 3 Sanderlings 2 Killdeer 8-10 Caspian terns 2-3 Willow flycatchers Several Marsh wrens Tons of Barn swallows, Bank swallows, and martins >12 Bald eagles >12 TVs Great day overall. Can't wait to see what else shows up in the coming weeks. -- John Guy Petruzzi Fine Art & Illustration www.johnguypetruzzi.com ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
