We observed the immature white ibis in the wetland south of Derwent this morning from approximately 9:15 until 10 AM. The bird was feeding about 30-40 yards from the railraod tracks and did not seem bothered by our presence. On our return to Marietta Road we were confronted by the operator of a backhoe who was excavating a trench under the tracks near the road. We told him why we were on the tracks but he did not seem impressed by the occurrenc of a white ibis in Ohio. He also pointed out that we were trespassing on private, railroad property. We could not dispute that and left promptly. Other birders should be aware of the possibility of work on the tracks and that access to the wetalnd could be denied.
