I spent several hours in Conneaut this past weekend (Fri/Sat/Sun mornings). A nice variety of shorebirds in modest numbers, but nothing extraordinary. Human and canine disturbances were at a minimum, at least during the morning hours. Some other birders reported much more detrimental activity during the afternoon and evening. Most birds present on all 3 days except as noted: American Avocet - 1 (seen on 8/14) Killdeer - 14+ Semipalmated Plover - 8+ Black Bellied Plover - 1 (seen on 8/14) Ruddy Turnstone - 3 Sanderling - 3 Lesser Yellowlegs - 5 Greater Yellowlegs - 2 Willet - 2 (seen on 8/16) Spotted Sandpiper - 2 Least Sandpiper - 18+ Semipalmated Sandpiper - 12+ Pectoral Sandpiper - 1 Wilson's Snipe - 1 Other birds of note: Sora (as many as 3 seen), Green Heron, Belted Kingfisher, Caspian Tern, Forster's Tern, Bald Eagle, Cooper's Hawk, Purple Martin, Cedar Waxwing, Blue-Winged Teal. The Snipe and Sora were seen in the southwest corner of the main "pool" and offered excellent views. Bob Krajeski North Kingsville, OH Postscript: For anyone planning to travel to Conneaut, please be aware that this coming Saturday (August 22) is the annual D-Day re-enactment which means the sand spit will be off limits from about noon through the afternoon (should be open during the morning to the best of my knowledge). This is done mainly as a safety precaution. No birds are in danger since the entire "battle" takes place on the adjacent beach west of the spit.
