I observed goldfinches building their nests here in the Columbus as early as June 20 when the first of the thistles started going to seed. They use the thistle down to line their nests. The earliest fledgling I saw came to my finch sock about a month later. Last weekend, when I was out birding, I observed goldfinch nestlings. I don't know if it was a second nesting or if they stagger their nesting so their not all nesting at the same time. Do goldfinches have more than one nesting per year? In either case, it wouldn't surprise me if any are beginning to nest now. We have at least another month of warm weather left. Lee Underschultz Firefly Hollow Little Hocking, OH As I was sitting here reading the Listserv Digest for today an American Goldfinch flew in and landed on a rope deck rail. It hopped over to a piece of yarn I draped over the rope and started plucking away. She gathered ahug beak full of yarn and then flew off. She just returned for more. Seems like strange behavior this late in the season and considering how cool the temps have been here lately. Has anyone else seen this type of behavior this late in the summer?
