Greetings, ?????? I swung over and picked up Chris Followay for an attempt at a lifebird for him (Hud-wit), but alas it was knot to be. Speaking of Knots, we did get those, always a good year bird, seemed to be the same two fresh juveniles mentioned by the venerable K.Kaufman. We first saw them in the spot north of the woodlot that is by now probably too flooded to attract shorebirds, they've been FILLING THIS AREA with water and now the best habitat is the area North West of the observation tower. While we were watching the knots and hoping the godwit would show, the knots and most of the other shorebirds ditched and went over to the less flooded area to the west. We followed and were rewarded with good views. All ducks were in basic plumage. List of Highlights: Red Knot: 2 juv. (beautiful "silver" knots) Stilt Sandpiper: 2 Juv S.B. Dowitcher: 5 juv. L. Yellowlegs : 40ish G Yellowlegs: 20ish Spotted Sandpiper: 2+ Pec. Sandpiper: 50ish Least Sandp: 40ish Semipalm. Sandp: 40ish White-rump Sandpiper: at least 5 with some great close views Semipalm Plover: 15ish Killdeer: 80+ Forsters Tern - 3 Caspian Tern - 8 Bonaparte's Gulls : 3 (out on the lake) Great Egrets Great Blue Herons Lotsa mixed Swallows Hooded Merganser: 10 Wood Duck : 10 Green Winged Teal : 15+ Blue-winged Teal :? 80+ ( wishing for a Cinnamon I searched, but no dice) N. Shoveler : 1 Mallards Large flocks of mixed Blackbirds (mostly grackles and RWBL) Red-tailed Hawks etc. I think that is about it for the highlights, I may have left a few migrants out, I apologise. We also cruised by the old Cedar Pt. Causeway and only saw limited shorebird habitat w/ Killdeer, also hit Huron pier and saw many thousands of gulls, but nothing but the usuals were present (and 24 Caspian Terns). Good luck and good birdin' -Ben Warner ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
