I bucked the wheateater trend and went looking for warblers at Huffman Metropark (Dayton area) this morning. From the overlook parking lot I walked down to the lake and along the north side of the lake shore. There was a lot of activity this morning, mostly within 20 ft fo the ground. There were quite a few American redstarts, they seemed to prefer foraging in the elms. Other foliage gleaners seen included Acadian flycatcher, red-eyed vireo. Downy, hairy, and red-bellied woodpeckers, northern flicker, and white-breasted nuthatches are almost always at this area, and today was no exception. The resident group of 15 or so double-crested cormorants were feeding near the shoreline, and appeared to be hunting as a pack. Some common species also present included northern cardinal, Carolina chickadee, killdeer, tufted titmouse (including one that grabbed a cicada mid-flight, flew to the ground like a wounded B-52, and proceeded to eat), and Carolina wren. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
