There was an excellent concentration of waterbirds along the western shore of Mosquito L. this morning; it included 35+ wood ducks, 300 mallards, Am. black duck, 20+ blue-winged teal, n. shovelers, green-winged teal, 18 hooded mergansers, 2 pied-billed grebes, double-crested cormorant, 30 great egrets, 7 bald eagles, 2 ospreys, 10 semipalmated plovers, 45 lesser yellowlegs, solitary sandpipers, semipalmated sandpipers, 50 least sandpipers, pectoral sandpipers, 5 stilt sandpipers, short-billed dowitcher, and Caspian tern. Yellow-throated vireo and warbling vireo were also heard. I went up to Conneaut next, and spent a few hours during mid-day. Shorebird highlights at Conneaut were juv. willet, juv. red knot, 2 juv. Baird's sandpipers, juv. stilt sandpiper, sanderlings, pectoral sandpipers, and short-billed dowitcher. Also seen were blue-winged teal, hooded merganser, black-crowned night-heron, green heron, Caspian terns, yellow warblers, and common yellowthroat.
