Pat Hayes and I conducted the monthly census on Saturday under cool but normal fall conditions. Had we done it on Friday we would have added several more species. For the day we had 51 species and 4384 individuals. The 51 species is the lowest October count in 12 years. The 12 year average is 57.5 species. No new species were added to the October census list which is 116 species. Four species species were observed for only the second time in 12 years of an October census. Those were Green-winged Teal, Blackpoll Warbler, Lincoln's Sparrow, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Unusual for the count were numbers of kinglets, they were everywhere. At times they were under foot and didn't want to move. High numbers of Brown Creepers and Winter Wren were of note. 158 Canada Goose * Wood Duck * American Black Duck 97 Mallard 4 Green-winged Teal * Lesser Scaup * Wild Turkey 131 Double-crested Cormorant 3 Great Blue Heron 6 Turkey Vulture 1 Bald Eagle * Cooper's Hawk 2 Killdeer 245 Bonaparte's Gull 643 Ring-billed Gull 251 Herring Gull 200 Gull species * Mourning Dove 1 Eastern Screech-Owl 3 Red-bellied Woodpecker 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 16 Downy Woodpecker 9 Northern Flicker 1 Eastern Phoebe 5 Blue Jay 31 American Crow 53 Black-capped Chickadee 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch 3 White-breasted Nuthatch 29 Brown Creeper 5 Carolina Wren 1 House Wren 17 Winter Wren 449 Golden-crowned Kinglet 157 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 100 Kinglet species 37 Hermit Thrush 394 American Robin 1 Gray Catbird 1 Brown Thrasher 129 European Starling 13 Ceder Waxwing 144 Yellow-rumped Warbler 2 Blackpoll Warbler 14 Chipping Sparrow 7 Song Sparrow 2 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Swamp Sparrow 203 White-throated Sparrow 79 White-crowned Sparrow 245 Dark-eyed Junco 125 Sparrow species 46 Northern Cardinal 1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak 38 Red-winged Blackbird 14 Rusty Blackbird 123 Common Grackle 12 House Finch 66 American Goldfinch 64 House Sparrow 51 Species 4384 individuals observed -- H.
