The Kirtland Bird Club field trip to the Shaker Lakes on October 11 was sparsely attended, both by birds and by birders. Dave Ligali and I had a pleasant walk around the lake and visited with Julie West, Gary Neuman, Andy Jones, Ben Fambrough, and others who stopped by Julie's Big Sit at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. It was cold and a bit windy, and the birds just seemed to stay away -- the Big Sit had its slowest year ever, too. Our short list follows. I'm pleased to report that the birds have picked up considerably at the Nature Center since the 11th -- Julie banded 80 birds on Wednesday, and quite a few on Friday, too.
