It doesn't help matters when people make up place names either. For instance, you may think it's easier to say Alum Lake when you really mean Alum Creek Reservoir but you do a disservice to newcomers to the forum. In an area where new reservoirs and retention ponds are being built it helps to use the correct name. The first time I ever read a post about Alum Lake I pored over a map looking at all the bodies of water in the Alum Creek flood plain before I realized that the poster actually meant Alum Creek Reservoir. The park on the southside of Whittier Ave. as you go onto the Whittier Peninsula is called Lower Scioto Park not Whittier Park. I wanted to go to an urban birdwalk one Saturday morning but it started at Whittier Park (it was even listed that way on the CA website). I looked all over a city map and didn't find Whittier Park. I couldn't even find a Whittier Park on the Columbus Department of Recreation and Parks website. One thing to remember is not everyone on the listserve is living in Ohio, I for one residing in Texas. I am also on the Texas listserve and the owner is very adamant about proper signing and everyone abides by his rules and it's very helpful. It would be very much appreciated on the Ohio listserve to help locate what area has been birded and where the birder is located as well. Not necessarily in the title, just somewhere in the message. Including the county is helpful for two reasons: 1) it's nice to know the general location where you birded, and 2) it enables automatic filtering of messages based on county names. Thanks, and good birding!
