I checked out Big Island Wildlife Area (the southern part along LaRue-Prospect Rd.) and found one each of both LeConte's and Nelson's Sparrows. They were probably just the tip of the iceberg, but finding more was difficult because of the wind. I arrived before 8:00 and stayed past noon, but only the first hour or so was productive. The forecast when I left this morning was for sunshine and little wind until noon, but the clouds and wind showed up soon after the sun came up. I found the birds by walking along the dikes around the impoundments, but I think it would have been much more productive if I took along my hip boots and wandered around within. There is a lot of great habitat for both species there this year.
