The pelagic trip out of Cleveland today did not seem like November. Beautiful sunny skies and temperatures near 70 degrees made the trip pleasant and more September-like. With this kind of weather you never know what to expect on the lake. I have seen days like this where little was around. Today was not one of those days. Although waterfowl numbers were very low, there were lots of gulls and decent numbers of loons and grebes. The whole trip there were lots of birds to look through. There were a number of good sightings. We had an immature BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE that gave a brief but nice view as it headed west. We had a very cooperative PARASITIC JAEGER. It chased around a few gulls and gave some nice views. The bird was not a juvenile. There was some discussion as to whether it was a pomarine or parasitic. The consensus was parasitic and my distant, fuzzy photos showed enough to confirm that. Other noteworthy sightings was a very cooperative white-winged scoter, and great looks at a Peregrine falcon putting on a spectacular aerial display. All in all a very enjoyable day. Many thanks to Bob Faber, Kim and Kenn Kaufman, and everybody else that helped put this together. Also thanks to the ships crew. Now if next week can go so well.
