Mary, On December 28, Bruce Glick posted to Ohio-Birds that the Allen's Hummingbird was last seen at 4:30 p.m. on December 27. I got a call from Mae Miller on January 2 and the bird had not returned so that indeed was the last date of observation. Hopefully, it headed back to California as the breeding season for Allen's starts there in late January. May also was very thrilled to have this bird, and to meet so many (500-600) interesting and polite birders, from as far away as Georgia, New Mexico, and even the Ukraine! She appreciates all the good conversation, the many bags of sugar (!) and the other wonderful gifts of baked goods, and other. I don't know if the OOS does anything like honoring hosts of rare birds, as some other states do (usually with a certificate of some kind), but I'd certainly nominate her as an extremely hospitable host.
