While running several errands around Columbus this afternoon, I 'ran into' sapsuckers at two different places, both acting as if Winter was waning.  Along Rocky Fork Creek in Shull Park in Gahanna one was calling from high in a tall Spruce tree.  Another bird was in Ridgewood Park (near the I-270, State 161 interchange) drumming and calling, and even chasing Downies away from tree wells.  Perhaps these birds are cueing in on sap flow rather than snowfall.
