On 12 Mar, 20-24 double-crested cormorants were in their customary roost tree, visible on the east side of I-71 just north of the Greenlawn Avenue on-ramp. A rough notion of the timing of their appearances and disappearances here over the past several years suggests--or at the very least does not rule out--that they are composed of locally nesting birds and their progeny. Breeding cormorants have accompanied locally-nesting great egrets and great blue herons at a quarry here for several years. It would be interesting if someone, maybe someone who commutes daily into the city, could keep track of how long this roost lasts this spring, and when it reassembles later, and lets the rest of us know.
