I spent the wet part of the morning at these two north-of-Columbus reservoirs looking for migrant waterfowl. Both reservoirs were scoured by the strong south wind (Hoover actually had whitecaps), but there were some sheltered areas that had birds. Highlights included: Dabbling Ducks - hardly any, other than small numbers of Mallards & Wood Ducks. Best was a flock of 8 N.Shovelers off Cheshire causeway at Alum Creek Lake. Diving Ducks - Lesser Scaups were the stars here, and Oxbow Sialnd in Hoover the place to see them, with flocks totalling 200 birds there. Only a few were at other locations. Red-breasted Mergansers were also still numberous, with 60+ from several locations at Alum Creek Lake and an additional 10 scattered around Hoover. Small groups of Buffleheads were at several locations on Hoover, while 10 Ring-necks and 20 Ruddies off Oxbow were also noteworthy. Other Waterbirds - single Loons were off SummerRidge access (Alum) and the Sunbury causeway (Hoover). Small flocks of Horned Grebes were off SummerRidge (8) and Oxbow (6), while a flock of 24 cormorants was huddled in the lee of an island off the Sunbury causeway (Hoover). Gulls - small #s of Ring-bills were at both lakes, but only Hoover had significant #s of Bonapartes, with 50+ total Raptors - no Eagles, but the Osprey at north Hoover was still hanging around the nesting platform off the boardwalk at Area N. Tree Swallows - a flock of 20 were playing in the updrafts over Alum Creek dam, while 2-4 were foraging around the Sunbury causeway at Hoover. Golden-cr.Kinglets - surprisingly few, with only singles at Wiese Rd and Oxbow (Hoover). Sparrows - a Fox Sparrow was hanging around Wiese Rd., while Chipping Sparrows were freshly-arrived at Oxbow Island and the Sunbury causeway. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
