Guilford Lake and the surrounding area of northern Columbiana County was a mecca for birding this morning. From 11AM to 12:30PM we birded the scenic and easily accessible area and adjacent side roads. Of the 44 species recorded, it was definitely the day of the Horned Grebe, with over 130 seen, with some in rafts of 20 or more! Also of note, today is the only time we remember Herring Gulls outnumbering Ring-billed Gulls at this location. The following is a list of our highlights: Mute Swan 7 Ring-necked Duck 70+ Lesser Scaup 30+ Bufflehead 40+ Common Goldeneye 1 pair Hooded Merganser 2 pair Common Merganser 3 males Red-breasted Merganser 80+ Ruddy Duck 60+ Pied-billed Grebe 5 Horned Grebe 130+ Double-crested Cormorant 10 (1st of the year) Bald Eagle 2 adults Sandhill Crane 1 flying over Salem Reservoir (seen last week also) Herring Gull 60+ Bonaparte's Gull 3 Eastern Phoebe 3 (1st of the year) Bob and Denise Lane _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail: Trusted email with powerful SPAM protection. http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/210850553/direct/01/ ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
