Some birds of note over the weekend in the Portage Lakes region of Summit County: Firestone Reservoir off Harrington Rd. - 1 Common Loon in perfect breeding plumage. North Reservoir - 2 Wood Duck (m,f), 2 Common Merganser (m,f) and 1 male Common Goldeneye. Also - Double-crested Cormorants have started building nests on the island off of the condos at Mariner's Point off State Mill Rd. near the spillway that empties into North Reservoir. About a dozen birds were in the trees with 4 or 5 nests in the works. Also 2 Osprey were on the nest platform at the big island off State Mill. Long Lake - 1 male Hooded Merganser. Nesmith Lake - 4 American Coot. Nimisila Reservoir - 8 Horned Grebe, 19 Red-breasted Merganser (17m,2f), 34 Ruddy Ducks, 2 Lesser Scaup (1m,1f) and 1 fly-over Merlin near Christman Rd. and the first boat launch off Christman. Also 3 Osprey at the 2 nests at Christman & Comet Rds. In the backwaters at the campground entrance were 4 Hooded Merganser (3m,1f), 2 Gadwall (m) and 5 Wood Duck (3m,2f). Douglas W.
