I spent most of the last two days searching for waterfowl etc. in Mahoning, Stark, and Summit Cos. in NE Ohio.  I had great luck finding ice, but ducks were a different story.  Here are the highlights, from west to east.......Summit L./Nesmith L./Portage Lakes/Nimisila Res. (Summit Co.): 4 mute swans, 2 gadwalls, 5 redheads, 12 ring-necked ducks, 2 ruddy ducks, 2 great blue herons, and 12 Am. coots.  A PEREGRINE FALCON was hunting at the I-76/Rte. 8 interchange area in Akron.  In Stark Co. at Walborn Res. were great blue heron, red-shouldered hawk, and 10 e. bluebirds.  At Berlin Res. (Stark Co. portion): 2 hooded mergansers, 3 common mergansers, ad. bald eagle, 1500 ring-billed gulls, and 70 herring gulls.  Large influx of gulls there, I looked them over pretty well on both days but didn't find anything unusual.  In Mahoning Co. I saw these birds: at L. Milton were 20 Am. black ducks, ring-necked duck, 3 c. goldeneyes, hooed merganser, 2 common
mergansers, a pair of red-shouldered hawks, and 2 hairy woodpeckers.  In Smith Twp. were imm. red-shouldered hawk, Am. kestrel, killdeer, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, and 5 horned larks.  A Beaver Twp. lake held a hen greater scaup and bufflehead.  On the Mahoning R. (Struthers-Lowellville were 3 ring-necked ducks and 6 hooded mergansers.  In Coitsville and Poland Twps. were 2 Am. black ducks, male ring-necked pheasant, another RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, pileated woodpecker, sharp-shinned hawk, and 14 e. bluebirds.  Craig Holt, Lowellville
