A few quick stops at the southern & northern parts of this wetland Metropark southeast of Columbus found most of the waterfowl present earlier in migration have moved on. The windy weather as today's front passed didn't appear to drop any fallout of migrating shorebirds or landbirds into the area, but there were still some interesting birds. Notables included: Osprey - there were a pair around the Arrowhead marsh platform, and there was a single bird on the Ellis pond platform. Dabbling Ducks - along with the expected Mallards were 2 pair of Gadwall, 4 pair of Blue-winged Teal, and 10-12 Green-winged Teal. Other waterfowl - no diving ducks other than a pair of Hooded mergansers. There was also a single Coot Shorebirds - only Kildeer could be found, but there were lots of bays and hidden puddles in the wetlands, so other birds could have been down out of the wind and not visible. Swallows - Tree and Barn were flying around the POnds, while I had Rough-winged along Walnut Creek south of the park (in Canal Winchester). Kinglets, Gnatcatchers - hardly any of the former, other than a few Ruby-crowns in Canal Winchester, but the latter were at almost every stop, even in the windy weather. Wrens - singing House Wrens were at every stop, so they are coming in quickly. Warblers - not much at Pick Podns, but the ashworth Bridge park in Canal Winchester had singing Yellow-throated, N.Parula, and Yellow-rumped. Sparrows - lots of Field Sparrows at every stop, but also had Swamp Sparrows and 1 White-crowned Sparrow along the Meadowlark Trail at Pick Ponds. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
