I birded two parcels of land pretty much all weekend in rural Morgan County near the north end of Burr Oak Lake, comprising about 65 acres consisting of oak/hickory forest, old field, pond/wetland, and brushy habitat. Yesterday morning (Saturday) hosted an excellent movement of very vocal Yellow-rumped warblers with many many of this species to every Black-throated Green or Black and white warbler at various spots. The highlight of the morning was a persistent singing adult Cape May warbler in perfect light in a large Norway spruce on the neighbor's parcel- what a treat, not a common spring visitor in this neck of the woods. Others included Parula, Yellow-throated, Prairie, and Blue-winged warbler, and a Louisiana waterthrush that came up into the yard for awhile to make its presence known. Also several Blue-headed Vireo and White-eyed Vireos and one Warbling vireo on Saturday. Today there was an equal amount of new birds and the majority of Saturday's awesome showing of Yellow-rumpeds seemed to have moved on with some lingering males still singing all day. New arrivals today included Wood thrush, Common yellowthroat, Yellow warbler, Hooded, Kentucky, and Cerulean. Notable also was a contingent of singing White-throated sparrows today, which have not been too common since about mid March. Pretty good weekend!
