The sharpie flight today was quite enjoyable, and much stronger than expected for this date, with a good number of birds dipping fairly low over our heads. A fair number of harriers also passed at low-altitude, including a number of males. Emil Bacik and I were joined by Robert Hershberger, Craig Holt, Greg Miller, Jerry Talkington, and Suzanne Wagner for most/part of the day. Today's totals from Conneaut's Malek Park (courtesy of Robert, who kept impeccable hourly totals): Turkey Vulture 1195 Osprey 1 Bald Eagle 1 Northern Harrier 17 Sharp-shinned Hawk 277 Cooper's Hawk 21 Red-shouldered Hawk 22 Red-tailed Hawk 125 American Kestrel 10 Merlin 3 Common Loon 4 Wilson's Snipe 9 Northern Flicker 40 Purple Martin 1 American Pipit 2 Included in this tally were a few hawks moving just after daybreak at Conneaut Harbor. The highlight on the sandspit was an out-of-place Great Horned Owl in a willow thicket out near the point...probably a short-distance migrant. Also present were two Dunlin.
