This is almost anti-climatic with all the great birding in northern Ohio this past weekend. The 13th May monthly census on Kelleys Island was conducted on Friday, May 15. Paula, Bartlett, John Lortz, and myself attempted to conduct the census but were interrupted. We started at 0630 but at 9:30 I was called by the banding station that they were over-loaded. Nets were shut down and Paula drove John out to help. John soon called and I stopped the census at 1000 near the KI school. After an hour and half, the banders were caught up, net raised again, and we finished the census. It was a record census. In fact the record had been broken by 1000. We recorded 108 species and 3618 individuals. The 13 year average is 89 species and 2868 individuals. Osprey and Prothonotary Warbler were added to the May species list which stands at 156 species over the last 13 years. We had 26 species of warbler on this census. Two additional warbler species were observed by others, making 28 species of warbler observed on the island on this day. Unfortunately, the Kirtland's Warbler I had schedule for the island missed and landed on the beach at Magee Marsh... ;>) Number Species 46 Canada Goose 5 Wood Duck 49 Mallard * Wild Turkey 1 Common Loon 78 Double-crested Cormorant 43 Great Blue Heron 3 Black-crowned Night-Heron 5 Turkey Vulture 1 Osprey 1 Bald Eagle 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk 3 Cooper's Hawk 4 Broad-winged Hawk 3 Red-tailed Hawk 1 Sora 8 Killdeer * Solitary Sandpiper 2 Spotted Sandpiper 75 Ring-billed Gull 121 Herring Gull * Great Black-backed Gull * Caspian Tern 1 Common Tern 5 Mourning Dove 2 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 19 Chimney Swift 7 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 22 Downy Woodpecker 4 Northern Flicker 13 Eastern Wood-Pewee 1 Acadian Flycatcher 1 "Trail's" Flycatcher 35 Least Flycatcher 5 Eastern Phoebe 11 Great Crested Flycatcher 33 Eastern Kingbird 2 Yellow-throated Vireo 1 Blue-headed Vireo 22 Warbling Vireo 2 Philadelphia Vireo 30 Red-eyed Vireo 12 Vireo species? 285 Blue Jay 13 American Crow 81 Purple Martin 114 Tree Swallow 9 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 162 Barn Swallow 32 Black-capped Chickadee 2 Carolina Wren 19 House Wren 3 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher * Eastern Bluebird 20 Veery 1 Gray-cheeked Thrush 13 Swainson's Thrush 3 Wood Thrush 186 American Robin 32 Gray Catbird 1 Brown Thrasher 73 European Starling 4 American Pipit 11 Cedar Waxwing * Golden-winged Warbler 35 Tennessee Warbler 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 18 Nashville Warbler 9 Northern Parula 111 Yellow Warbler 38 Chestnut-sided Warbler 50 Magnolia Warbler 8 Cape May Warbler 15 Black-throated Blue Warbler 8 Yellow-rumped Warbler 29 Black-throated Green Warbler 22 Blackburnian Warbler 5 Palm Warbler 14 Bay-breasted Warbler 4 Blackpoll Warbler 5 Cerulean Warbler 19 Black-and-white Warbler 69 American Redstart 1 Prothonotary Warbler 22 Ovenbird 16 Northern Waterthrush * Kentucky Warbler 7 Mourning Warbler 7 Common Yellowthroat 1 Hooded Warbler 2 Wilson's Warbler 3 Canada Warbler 81 Warbler species? 19 Scarlet Tanager 2 Eastern Towhee 15 Chipping Sparrow 1 Field Sparrow 7 Savannah Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 13 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 Swamp Sparrow 48 White-throated Sparrow 16 White-crowned Sparrow 29 Northern Cardinal 11 Rose-breasted Grosbeak 29 Indigo Bunting 1 Bobolink 361 Red-winged Blackbird 492 Common Grackle 33 Brown-headed Cowbird 22 Orchard Oriole 93 Baltimore Oriole 21 House Finch 21 American Goldfinch 37 House Sparrow * = observed on the island on count day but not during the census -- H.
