On the way back from Columbus on Thursday, I saw what appeared to be
a Common Grackle emerge from the median of I-71 and fly in the
direction of my car. I tapped the brakes as it was struggling to gain
altitude and it appeared that I might hit the bird. As it neared my
windshield, it managed to gain enough speed and height to avoid my
car and I was able to see why it was struggling. It was carrying a
shrew, mouse or vole of some type in its beak. I was unaware of their
ability to take such large prey.
