Paula Bartlett and I conducted the 13th June monthly census on Kelleys Island yesterday. Weather was in the 70's-80's, SW winds 5-15 mph, and PC skies; beautiful day. 60 species were observed with 3407 individuals. The 13 year average is 60.5 species and 2911 individuals. Highlights included a second-year Great Black-backed Gull and a Common Tern. Both were observed for only the second time on the June census. The most unusual missing species was the Gray Catbird which was missed for the first time. Red-eyed Vireo numbers were down as well. The 13 year average is 10 birds per census and we recorded only 2. Gull numbers, especially Ring-billed Gull were way above average. The Kelleys Island eagle nest has one almost fully grown young still sitting in it. This is the second year in a row for a successful nesting on the island. One note of interest, while waiting for the ferry at Marblehead, we observed 3000+ Common Grackle flying towards Kelleys Island from the mainland around 6:00 AM. Seems early for grackle flocks and why were they headed for Kelleys? We didn't find any large flocks on the census. 44 Double-crested Cormorant 14 Great Blue Heron 1 Great Egret 1 Black-crowned Night-Heron 301 Canada Goose 39 Mallard 17 Turkey Vulture * Bald Eagle 1 Cooper's Hawk 1 Red-tailed Hawk 11 Killdeer 1 Spotted Sandpiper 637 Ring-billed Gull 416 Herring Gull 1 Great Black-backed Gull 1 Common Tern 5 Mourning Dove 1 Black-billed Cuckoo 5 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1 Eastern Screech-Owl 11 Chimney Sift 1 Belted Kingfisher 1 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 17 Downy Woodpecker 2 Northern Flicker 6 Eastern Wood-Pewee 1 Acadian Flycatcher 1 Eastern Phoebe 2 Great Crested Flycatcher 11 Eastern Kingbird 1 Yellow-throated Vireo 12 Warbling Vireo 2 Red-eyed Vireo 7 Blue Jay 12 American Crow 112 Purple Martin 128 Tree Swallow 16 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 4 Bank Swallow 279 Barn Swallow 34 Black-capped Chickadee 23 House Wren 1 Wood Thrush 162 American Robin 46 European Starling 44 Cedar Waxwing 126 Yellow Warbler 2 Chestnut-sided Warbler 7 American Redstart 2 Common Yellowthroat 40 Northern Cardinal 17 Indigo Bunting 10 Chipping Sparrow 258 Red-winged Blackbird 361 Common Grackle 26 Brown-headed Cowbird 5 Orchard Oriole 43 Baltimore Oriole 24 House Finch 8 American Goldfinch 44 House Finch 60 species 3407 individuals -- H.
