Rick Asamoto and I went birding along the Great Miami River in Dayton and Englewood MP after work this afternoon. We found one Stilt Sandpiper along the river. The great shorebird habitat that was there (some remains) has been mostly destroyed by removal of the gravel that was put down to build a temporary construction road for replacement of the Stewart St bridge. We did see 55 adult Herring Gulls and three 1st year juveniles. This seems to be a very large number for SW Ohio, especially at this time of year. There was one Caspian Tern along the river also. At Englewood MP (Montgomery County) we had nine species of shorebirds. Semipalmated Plover Killdeer Spotted Sandpiper Solitary Sandpiper Lesser Yellowlegs Semipalmated Sandpiper Least Sandpiper Pectoral Sandpiper Stilt Sandpiper We also saw one Yellow-throated Warbler and many Barn Swallows and Purple Martins at Englewood.
