All, Last night, I joined Bill Evans (co-creator of the CD "Flight Calls of Migratory Birds") in the Glen as he tried to capture thermal image video of migrating birds. Unfortunately, the weather skunked us out. He had come down that day from NY, hoping to observe a good night flight for his ongoing research. He selected a location in the central part of Glen Helen, near where Grinnell Rd. and the Little Miami bisect the preserve. We had a handful of Swainson's thrushes fly over, heard a barred owl, and saw a screech owl hunting roadside, but other than that, it was a quiet night. Looking at the radar, Bill would have found a much more productive spot for his research if he had decided to set up his instruments a hundred miles west of us. More on Bill and his research at oldbird.org In other news, we're still seeing some summer residents in the Glen. Yellow-throated vireo continues to sing outside my office. -Nick -- Nick Boutis Director, Glen Helen Ecology Institute Antioch College 405 Corry St. Yellow Springs, OH 45387 [log in to unmask] 937-769-1902 www.glenhelen.org ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
