The Columbus Audubon field trip to these 2 downtown Columbus parks found a modest fallout. The changing weather stranded some migrants around these two parks, but it wasn't the big fallout experienced up at Lake Erie. What was interesting was a big movement of Monarchs, with some 80-100 on the morning. Notable birds in about 3.5 hours of birding included: Herons - still good numbers, with 7 Great Blues and 8+ Great Egrets around the shallows above Greenlawn dam Shorebirds - little other than 20+ Kildeer Raptors - not much yet, but an Osprey was fishing above the dam early. Hummingbird - only a single Ruby-throat, sqabbling with chickadees over a buggy patch of shrubs at Berliner. Flycatchers - 5-6 Wood Pewees were spread between the 2 parks, while an Acadian was at Scioto and a Phoebe at Berliner. Swallows, Swifts - several small (10-15 bird) flocks of Rough-wings were the only swallows found, while some 20-30 swifts were around the dam area. Vireos - we heard one Warbling at Scioto Thrushes,Mimids - 1-2 Swainson's were at each park, while Catbirds were abundant in the shrubby edges of Scioto, which also held 2 Brown Thrashers Warblers - 14 species scattered in several flocks at both parks, but no big numbers: Nashville, Tennessee, Magnolia (3), Black-thr.Blue, Black-thr.Green, Cape May, Yellow-throated (Berliner), Palm, Bay-breasted (3), Redstart (2), Black&White, N.Waterthrush (Berliner), Ovenbird (heard at Berliner, but the Grange banding team had trapped one at Scioto), Common Yellowthroat Grosbeaks,Buntings - No grosbeaks, - Blue or Rose-breasted -, but there were still 7-8 Indigo Buntings in the weedfields north of the Grange Audubon Center at Scioto ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
