This afternoon at Wellington Upground Reservoir, Ken and I found a Red- throated Loon, in addition to the expected hundreds of Ruddy Ducks, Coots, and Canada Geese. We found about 10 Redheads, 3 Pied-billed Grebes and several Ring-billed Gulls. We then birded the new (to us, at least) restored wetlands on the north side of Buckeye Woods County Park in Medina County (an entrance to the wetlands is south of US 42 near Columbia Road). In the pond on the far south side of the loop trail were 6 Wilson's Snipe, a few Killdeer, a Lesser Yellowlegs, and a Stilt Sandpiper, along with the ducks. In the various ponds there were many Mallard, 30-40 Green- winged Teal, 15-20 Wood Ducks, several Shovelers and Coots, a few Gadwall and American Wigeon, and to my surprise, a pair of Canvasbacks! The drier areas hosted 60 or more American Goldfinch harvesting seeds. Early this morning near the Krabill Shelter of Chippewa Lake County Park (also Medina County) we saw a flock of about 30 Rusty Blackbirds, new to us for this park which is our new favorite everyday birding site not far from home. The ducks we'd found on the lake Friday morning--a number of Gadwall, Ruddy Ducks and Ring-necked Ducks--were gone. A couple Coot remained, as well as Bonaparte's and Ring-billed Gulls and a Cormorant. 2 adult Bald Eagles perched in trees near the inlet. The woods and weedy areas yielded many Song and a few White- throated Sparrows--yesterday Ken had mostly White-throated and White- crowned. There were still some Yellow-rumped Warblers, but not the hundred or so we saw multiple times a few weeks ago. I'm fascinated by these glimpses of migration.
