Hi all, More and more reports are appearing across the eastern US of Rufous Hummingbirds and other species. So far, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania Virginia, South Carolina, and more have reported these orange gems. Of greater interest, TWO ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS at one feeder (!!!) have been reported in the upper peninsula of Michigan in the past couple days. I've been reading into previous years' data, and it seems the past two years have been less productive than others. Don Gorney writes on the Indiana Birding listserv: "Indiana has 62 records of Rufous, one of Black-chinned, one Green Violet-Ear, and one Anna's. So, anything is possible. Most of the rarity records come in the last several years since I began tracking late hummingbird reports. However, Rufous records in the last few years have been scant with just one report each in 2008 and 2009." Remember, even no data is good data! It still helps in contributing to our knowledge of vagrant hummingbird patterns and their "irruptions." Leave your feeders, and look out the windows! If you haven't already, add your feeder location to this Google Map: http://tinyurl.com/27qs4k7 Or email me with a location so I can add it.
