Spent 1 1/2 hrs at the Harveysburg Rd. terminus and the beach today,
with no Pacific loon seen. I remember seeing one at the same spot in
1996. There were only two common loons present, but lots of horned
grebes and Bonaparte's gulls.
Apparently Pacific loons may, once they adopt a wrong-way migration,
adapt to wintering along the Atlantic coast; one discussed on the Cayuga
mailing list could be returning for the third year in a row--
http://www.birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html . These are quite
beautiful birds in breeding plumage, and maybe some day one will show up
here in spring.
