Jerry Sniderman and I stopped by Lorain on our birding excursion to northern Ohio today. There were stiff winds out of the west under sunny skies when at 1:30 p.m. we flushed two Short-eared Owls from about 10 feet off the low dike around the impoundment near the southwest corner (the corner closest to the the parking lot). It was a stunner as the birds were totally out in the open close to the dike in the middle of the day. They drifted off to the east and seem to land somewhere near the lake shore.
