Joel Greenberg and I visited Killdeer Plains WA this morning, looking mainly for waterfowl. Most sites were devoid of them, but the middle impoundment of Pond 27 along Cty 68 had the following: 350 coots 45 swans, all or mostly all tundras; they were calling one mute swan 55 g. white-fronted geese one white snow goose numbers <20 @ of: pintails green-winged teals black ducks gadwalls ruddy ducks lesser scaups redheads canvasbacks American wigeons ring-necked ducks sorry, no mallards or Canada geese. couldn't find any shrikes, probably too windy. Spent some time talking with some hunters in the parking lot. They were there after pheasants, checking out an audio tape of a red-tailed hawk's scream. They told us it was part of their strategy to keep pheasants from breaking cover before they got close enough. No owls were found at the well-known roost sites, but the shotgun fire kept us from staying long.
