Snow Goose: A dark phase adult spotted among hundreds of Canadas at Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area on 27-29 Oct, in pond/embankment number 27 along CH 68 (Ben Warner). Cackling Goose: One individual present with the above geese on 29 Oct (Julie and Ken Davis). 7 birds were found on 31 Oct among the Canadas at St. Mary's Fish Hatchery (Brian Menker). Brant: One bird at Lakeshore Park, Ashtabula, on 30 Oct (John Pogacnik). BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK: This bird, found by Linda Houshower several weeks ago, is at Buckeye Lake in Bluffton, Allen County. Further directions from Sherrie Duris: ³The bird is being seen along the west end of the quarry/lake. From I75 get off at exit 142 and head west on 103. Turn right at Main street and go north to the parking lot of the quarry on left. Follow trail left between creek and quarry to west end." PACIFIC LOON: A non-breeding plumaged bird associating with a few Common Loons in the bay near Harveysburg Rd at Caesar Creek State Park on 31 Oct (Rick Asamoto and Allan Claybon). Red-necked Grebe: One individual present associating with a Pied-billed Grebe and seven Ruddy Duck at Guilford Lake, Columbiana County behind the State Park Office on 24-31 Oct (Bob and Denise Lane). Long-tailed Duck: 2 birds found at Ladue Reservoir in Geauga County on 25 Oct (Inga Schmidt). American Avocet: 5 birds present at the Caesar Creek State Park beach in Wilmington on 27 Oct (Larry Gara). Marbled Godwit: 2-3 individuals present on 24 Oct at the estuary of Crane Creek on the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge (Linda Sekura). Bairdıs Sandpiper: A late bird was found at Buck Creek State Park on mudflats at the northern end of the lake 24 Oct (Doug Overacker). Another couple stragglers were seen at Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area on 27 Oct, along with many other shorebirds, south of 77 on the east side of CH-108 (Ben Warner). Pomarine Jaeger: An immature bird flying by Edgewater Park, Cleveland on 30 Oct (Jim McCormac). Franklinıs Gull: Larry Gara reported the bird on 27 Oct at Caesar Creek beach area, now present for about a month. The next day, 29 birds were seen at the same place! (Larry Gara and Bob Powell) Tom Kemp reported two birds at two different locations; one on the beach at Metzger Marsh on 28 Oct, one at Maumee River Rapids at Grand Rapids on 29 Oct.\ CALIFORNIA GULL: A first-winter bird reported by Craig Holt among hundreds of gulls at Conneaut Harbor, reported 29-30 Oct. Golden Eagle: One bird spotted on 24 Oct, west of the intersection of I-71 and I-77, near the exit for the Wilds! (John Kuenzli) EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE: One bird has been hanging around the house and feeders of 1389 County Road 140, Sugarcreek (Bobolink Rare Bird Alert). Northern Shrike: One bird along CH-115 in Killdeer Plains, 28 Oct (Dan Sparks-Jackson). CAVE SWALLOW: This week was the week for Cave Swallows, with more likely to come. All reports come from the lakefront. Three birds flying east offshore near the Perry-Paineseville Twp boundary on 27 Oct, Lake County (John Pogacnik). Gabe Leidy reported three from the Lorain Harbor Impoundment with 4 Northern Rough-winged Swallows, present 30-31 Oct. Bob Krajeski found another 5 Cave Swallows near the picnic tables at the public beach at Conneaut Harbor on 30 Oct. John Pogacnik found a couple other groups on 30 Oct, both in Ashtabula County: 2 birds at Lakeshore park, and 4 at Geneva State Park, north of the marina. On 31 Oct, Erik Bruder found 2 birds at Huntington Reservation in Bay Village. To put this massive, remarkable invasion in context, hereıs a report from Ron Ridout on OntarioBirds, 29 Oct, which reports over 250 Cave Swallows in two locations: ³The Cave Swallow movement continued at Long Point today with the tally by noon standing at 21 at our Old Cut station and the Tip station reporting 24 to that point. The bulk of the movement appears to have peaked here yesterday. The final tallies were 147 at Old Cut, 105 at the Tip and one here at BSC headquarters along with the handful that Matt Timpf reported at Port Rowan harbour last evening.² Blue-gray Gnatcatcher: A late individual was noted at College Hill/Tanglewood Preserve in the Cincinnati area 24 Oct (Steve Pelikan). Nelsonıs Sparrow: 2 birds at Deer Creek National Wildlife Area in the southern wetlands on 25 Oct (Jay Lehman). Le Conteıs Sparrow: One bird reported 31 Oct at Mentor Marsh on the Rarebird.org forum by user ³Kid2169.² Red Crossbill: A flock of 8 seen at Cullen Park in the Toledo area on 29 Oct (Greg Links). Common Redpoll: 6 redpolls found by John Pogacnik on 30 Oct at Geneva State Park, Ashtabula County.
