I checked out the Caesar Creek North Pool today, but did not find the Purple Sandpiper reported by Jay Lehman yesterday. There be nothing notable (no Long-tailed Ducks, no Red-necked Grebes), I had to content myself with taking winter wonderful photos in the bright sunshine. On the way home, I decided to check out Cowan Lake. It was only about 40% icebound, versus 80% on Friday, but oddly there were many fewer waterfowl. I found three flocks of Canada Geese, each of about 70 birds. In the first one, I noticed some bright orange legs and on closer examination, found they belonged to a lone Greater White-fronted Goose. See photos at http://picasaweb.google.com/rdp1710/CowanGreaterWhiteFrontedGoose?feat=directlink These birds were at the South Shore Marina. There was another flock at the beach and a third near the fishing pier. The latter flock included a white bird that turned out to be a Tundra Swan.
