Sandy Tkach and I conducted the monthly census yesterday. The January average over 12 years had been 39 species. Yesterday we managed 49 species which now makes the January average 40 species. The 13753 individuals was our second highest count of individuals on a January census. We counted from 0815 to 1315 in cold, foggy-misty-snowy conditions. In fact the weather prevented the planes from flying so I was "stuck" on the island for an extra night. We added three new species to the January census list. Those were Mute Swan, Red-shouldered Hawk, and Common Redpoll. Four species were recorded for only the second time. Those were Redhead, Northern Harrier, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and Fox Sparrow. Seven species recorded all-time highs. Those were Common Goldeneye, Common Merganser, Bald Eagle, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, American Crow, and American Goldfinch. Of the 61 Bald eagles observed 24 were adults, 30 were immature, and 7 unidentified age. At one point we had 22 eagles sitting in one small cluster of trees. The high counts of woodpeckers maybe attributed to the ash-borer and all the dead/dying ash trees. *2 Mute Swan* 36 Tundra Swan 4 Gadwall 57 American Black Duck 27 Mallard 18 Redhead 166 Greater Scaup 471 Bufflehead *4108* Common Goldeneye 2 Hooded Merganser *479 * Common Merganser 3820 Diving Duck species? * Wild Turkey 1 Great Blue Heron *61* Bald Eagle 1 Northern Harrier 1 Cooper's Hawk *1 Red-shouldered Hawk* 2 Red-tailed Hawk 1 Rough-legged Hawk 1830 Ring-billed Gull 805 Herring Gull 48 Great Black-backed Gull 550 Gull species 3 Mourning Dove 1 Eastern Screech-Owl *8* Red-bellied Woodpecker 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker *49* Downy Woodpecker 16 Northern Flicker 2 Blue Jay *49* American Crow 77 Black-capped Chickadee * Red-breasted Nuthatch * White-breasted Nuthatch 8 Brown Creeper 3 Carolina Wren 5 Golden-crowned Kinglet 1 Eastern Bluebird 16 Hermit Thrush 189 American Robin 487 European Starling 4 Cedar Waxwing 21 Yellow-rumped Warbler 16 American Tree Sparrow 2 Fox Sparrow 102 White-throated Sparrow 67 Dark-eyed Junco 74 Northern Cardinal 16 Purple Finch 8 House Finch *5 Common Redpoll* *26* American Goldfinch 6 House Sparrow 49 species 13753 individuals * = species observed on the island on census day but not on census route -- H.
