Thanks for the pictures. Several folks were in the area to search for the snowy owl that was reported. But no one that I know of was successful in finding a snowy owl. This red-tail certainly could be mistaken for a snowy owl. Mary L. Warren Wildlife Communications Specialist Magee Marsh Wildlife Area 13229 W. This is the spot that a Snowy Owl was reported on Jan. 2. From what I can gather from some reports and other observers is that the alleged owl was only seen at a long distance. When we first arrived on the scene the bird was indeed distantly perched low in tree on the edge of a woodlot. To make sure of what it was I hiked closer and as I did the bird obliged by flying closer too, it was clear then the bird was a hawk. I took some photos, it was a beautiful bird, and apparently a Red-tailed Hawk, unfeathered large feet, and some reddish brown shadowings in the tail. Anyways, whether or not a Snowy Owl was in this spot a few days ago should maybe be called into question, but I can't really say since I wasn't there. Anybody have a good look at the owl or pictures? Anyways, it was a beautiful hawk, almost completely white.
