Hello , I am not questioning the ID of these Great Horned Owls but I have some questions . I am trying to learn behavior of birds. First question is could these have been Long Eared Owls as Long Ears are gregarious and hang out together while here in the winter. ? Also It is nesting time for Great Horns and I would think females would be incubating and for males to hang out would that be odd as say they may be territorial. Like I said , please I am not questioning the ID but wondering about this group behavior. Broad St. and James Rd. in Columbus, and sitting on the hoods of the vehicles were 7 great horned owls. Some where in pairs, others individual, but all seven were sitting along a row of 10-12 vehicles. Also on the vehicle hoods we found a few pellets. There are some older neighborhoods with mature trees in that area, and I suspect both our property and the surrounding area provide numerous small mammals to munch on, but still this seemed an odd concentration. We were able to do our work with only minimal disturbance. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
