I decided to drive Rural Dale Rd. through Muskingum on my way home from
Indy. I went down SR60 through Duncan Falls. Approx 1.5 miles south there
is a pull-off on the right. A large ice jam has slowed river surface flow
down and there are several hundred geese present. Amongst the Canadas are
two Ross’s geese.
On Wenesday, I located the Golden Eagle at roost in a tree. It was in
the same area today in flight. Coal Hill Rd to the first crossroads, left
and was about 1/2 mile out this road. If not frozen, you will need 4-
wheel. Further out this road there is a small open lake on the left- 6
Trumpeter Swans, 8 ring-neck ducks, few black ducks and mallards. No snipe
in the swampy outflow either days, although it has been there previously.
I was unable to locate shrike either day.
Lastly- In a tree top at the Prouty/340 intersection, I saw a UFO
falcon- Dark thick malar stripe taking in entire eye, no white stripe
above eye. Pale chest background color with fairly wide dark red/brown
nearly black stripes and spots covering entire chest and abdomen that I
could see. No obvious banding on tail, I did not see back. Tentative
juvenile peregrine but I am unsure when they get adult plumage. Please be
on the lookout for this bird.
