I just wanted to share my excitement today. We had four Wood Ducks on the pond this morning (two boys and two girls). Last year we installed a Wood Duck box and all we got was a starling nesting and then I found a squirrel living in it this winter. We've since cleaned it out, removed any branches the squirrels could use to get to it and put fresh cedar chips in it. Today one of the females flew up on the box and poked her head inside to look around. She did this twice during my time observing them. She didn't go in but they did hand around for quite a while. I am hopeful for a nesting pair this year. Here are the rest of my observations out of my home office window while working this morning: Observation date: 3/22/11 Number of species: 19 Wood Duck 4 Mallard 2 Cooper's Hawk 1 Mourning Dove 1 Downy Woodpecker 2 Carolina Chickadee 1 European Starling 6 Dark-eyed Junco (Slate-colored) 5 Northern Cardinal 1 Common Grackle 1 House Finch 6 American Goldfinch 3 House Sparrow 6 Brown-headed Cowbird 2 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 Blue Jay 3 Titmouse 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 1 Red-winged Blackbird 5 Larry Orient, OH (Franklin County) ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
