As first spotted by Lynda Andrews, there are a pair of large white waterfowl at the gravel pit just north of The Plains and south of Nelsonville. Upon closer inspection, they are indeed white pelicans. I spoke with the owner who is happy to have people come take a look as long as they don't get too close and chech in at the office first. He indicated that he believes they've stopped over here for the last 6-8 years, but only stay a couple days. He had not seen them before I spoke with him, so perhaps they just arrived. While driving to the Forest Headquarters this morning (8:00 a.m.) I observed two swans at the gravel pit pond in the Circle Hill area. It lies along Rt. 33 just north of The Plains exit. They were at the far end of the pond, toward the Hocking River, making identification virtually impossible during an over the shoulder look at 60 mph ...just haven't gotten that skill down yet... : ) Would be interested in hearing what they may be if someone else is fortunate enough to make the identification. Chances are they are mute swans but not for certain....
