There was a large area of open water between South Bass Island and Ballast island yesterday that was full of ducks-estimated about a thousand. Mostly Common Goldeneye but with about 100 Redheads, 50 Scaup Sp., 25 Canvasback, a few Bufflehead and at least one Wigeon in the mix. There were a few Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls on the edges of the ice. We have had Turkey Vultures near the ice at the South Bass State Park feeding on fish guts left by ice fisherman all week. There was a large flock of Herring Gulls (about 100) mixed with about 25 Great Black-backed Gulls also following appearance of fish guts on the ice between Rattlesnake and South Bass Island. Off the South Bass Island Lighthouse, an immature Bald Eagle was seen yesterday floating slowly by on an ice floe. Chris Ladd reports an adult Bald Eagle has been feeding on ducks regularly at the Village Water Plant on the east side of the island. The moving patches of open water have been full of ducks. Large movements of crows heading north over the last few days and red-winged blackbirds are everywhere on the island. We have several inches of snow this morning so the feeders are full again with American Goldfinches, House Finches, a few White-throated Sparrows, a Tree Sparrow, Northern Cardinals, Downy Woodpeckers, a single female brown-headed cowbird, and am watching for the yellow-rumped warbler that has made almost a daily appearance at my feeder since February 22.
