Not much in the way of waterfowl numbers at LaDue Reservoir (Geauga County) yesterday but we (young birder Wes and I) did observe three first-year eagles soaring over the lake and putting on a short fighting scene for us. On the way home I went down Rapids Road toward Burton, OH and saw the two Sandhill Cranes in the corn stubble field about ½ mile south of Rt 87. Because light was good I tried a little digiscoping and was rewarded with what appeared to be mating between the two birds. I have not done any further homework on this but have a few pictures. https://picasaweb.google.com/mvalencic/LaDue# The one bird (female?) extended its wings, fluttering them a bit, and extended its neck horizontally. The other bird approached and mounted for about 20 seconds, jumped off and went about grazing. Thanks to Wes for reminding me of these birds before we parted company at LaDue.
