Sandy Tkach, June Campbell, and I conducted the April monthly census today. Weather was beautiful. Temp started about 36 and got to about 50, clear skies, winds out of the W-NW 10-20 mph. We observed 77 species on the census route and an additional 4 after the route. The 77 species is the best in 14 years of the April census. In addition, we observed 10,113 individual which is also our top showing. The 14 year average is 67 species and 4825 individuals. Nothing really unusual was observed but Northern Harrier and Marsh Wren were firsts for the April count. 1 Common Loon 2 Horned Grebe 429 Double-crested Cormorant 13 Great Blue Heron 11 Turkey Vulture 33 Canada Goose 7 Wood Duck 53 Mallard 2 Blue-winged Teal 6 Redhead 25 Greater Scaup 63 Lesser Scaup 35 Common Goldeneye 393 Bufflehead 4 Hooded Merganser 11 Common Merganser 2943 Red-breasted Merganser 2 Bald Eagle 5 Northern Harrier 7 Sharp-shinned hawk 2 Cooper's Hawk 2 Red-tailed Hawk 4 American Kestrel 2 Merlin 1 Sora 1 American Coot 3 Killdeer 2525 Bonaparte's Gull 34 Ring-billed Gull 42 Herring Gull 1 Great Black-backed Gull 2 Caspian Tern * Common Tern 1 Forster's Tern 4 Mourning Dove 1 Eastern Screech-Owl 5 Belted Kingfisher 3 Red-bellied Woodpecker 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 15 Downy Woodpecker 23 Northern Flicker 2 Eastern Phoebe 1 Blue Jay 19 American Crow 1 Horned Lark 16 Purple Martin 644 Tree Swallow 23 Northern Rough-winged Swallow * Bank Swallow 305 Barn Swallow 650+ Swallow species 45 Black-capped Chickadee * Red-breasted Nuthatch 8 Brown Creeper 2 Carolina Wren 3 Winter Wren 1 Marsh Wren 6 Golden-crowned Kinglet 7 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 4 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 2 Eastern Bluebird 3 Hermit Thrush 221 American Robin 1 Brown Thrasher 55 European Starling 8 Cedar Waxwing 48 Yellow-rumped Warbler 48 Northern Cardinal 1 Eastern Towhee 64 Chipping Sparrow 2 Field Sparrow 2 Fox Sparrow 3 Song Sparrow 98 White-throated Sparrow 96 Dark-eyed Junco 462 Red-winged Blackbird 2 Rusty Blackbird 368 Common Grackle 52 Brown-headed Cowbird 72 House Finch * American Goldfinch 50 House Sparrow 77 species 10,113 individuals Tom -- H.
