So, I found this little community lake (Little Punderson Lake) in Geauga County with a bunch of Scaup and Buffleheads swimming near the shore. I continue to question myself on Greater vs Lesser Scaup but finally have a picture of a single bird and its wing stripe. https://picasaweb.google.com/mvalencic/ScaupQuest# My Kauffman guide makes 'longer vs shorter' wing stripe look easy but when I looked at Sibley's it was not so cut-n-dry. I would appreciate hearing from those of you who really can tell Lesser from Greater. \ I think this is a Greater Scaup based on minimal point on the head - a pretty 'round-and-robust' head and wide bill - and I interpret the wing stripe as 'long'. I am prepared to be humbled if incorrect.
