With the recent front, a lot of short-distance migrants (Predominantly from the southern U.S. and not Central America) have started to arrive in numbers. This weekend may see the peak movement of Fox Sparrow. A short trip to the Navarre Banding Station (Navarre Unit, Ottawa NWR) for prep work tallied 78 Fox Sparrow, 7 Winter Wren, 2 Hermit Thrush, 3 Eastern Towhee, and a few Myrtle Warbler, Brown Creeper, and Golden-crowned Kinglets. Also, one Louisiana Waterthrush was singing his heart out. A lot of Rusty Blackbirds were working the buttonbush swamp. These along with a good array of waterfowl on the lake made for a nice morning. Weather predictions this weekend looks like a great time to get out and enjoy the early landbird migrants. In fact, there may be some surprising "one ofs". The front in southern Ohio is forecast to move northward over the weekend. Just yesterday, I left 70 degrees in Springfield and in the time to drive to Killdeer Plains was down to 44. If possible get out and enjoy the changing times and avifauna in your area. Things are a hopping and they're not all bunnies.
