Today Linda and I visited the Yellow-crowned Night Herons in Bexley. The pair were working on one nest while a lone bird was perched close to the second nest. They are always a treat. Easier to view at their current site than when they nested at Overbrook Drive between Indianola and High years ago. Later we took a walk around Blacklick Metro Park. Like Ken Davis' observations at the state capitol there were Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers everywhere. We stopped counting at 13. Other birds of interest included Brown Creeper, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Fox Sparrow. Hermit Thrush and Brown Thrasher. Later we visited Pickerington Ponds where there was a nice selection of grassland species including Field, Song, Savannah, White-crowned, American Tree and Swamp sparrows. Waterfowl included Northern Shoveler, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal, Hooded and Red-breasted Mergansers, Ruddy Duck and Wood Duck. Numerous Great Egrets were around the Blue Wing Pond and a pair of Osprey were making their presence known. A Ring-necked Pheasant called from just outside the observation blind. It was so loud one might have thought it to be in the blind. Staying in with today's weather was not an option. Time to exercise the neck and get ready for the arrival of the warblers.
