I'll just add one to that list, Margaret, but it's a goodie; osprey with a fish in its talons behind the nature center at the neighbors wetlands. I've been asked to do some volunteer work at the Taft Reserve, so I used this overcast morning to scout it out. There were a couple of real surprises, but nothing extraordinary for central Ohio: double-crested cormorant - a small flock of fly-overs, totally unexpected great blue heron - another fly-over Canada goose - 4 in a small pond along the horse trail mallard - one male, same small pond ring-necked ducks - 7, (4m, 3f) same small pond turkey vulture American kestrel - near the north (Flint Ridge) entrance mourning dove red-bellied woodpeckers - drumming downy woodpeckers - drumming northern flickers - at least 7 together, probably in migration tree swallows - using bluebird nest boxes along horse trails golden-crowned kinglets - several, both entrances in woods northern mockingbird - at least 3, all singing heartily brown thrasher - near Nature Center, also singing heartily eastern bluebirds - also using nest boxes American robins Carolina chickadees tufted titmouse white-breasted nuthatch blue jay American crow European starling purple finch - I don't see these here much, so this was a very pleasant surprise. A neighbor near the north entrance has feeders, and the beautiful male uses the trees in the reserve for his cover, apparently. Also a female. American goldfinch - near the Nature Center The sparrows were out in force, all singing: eastern towhee chipping sparrow field sparrow - LOTS savannah sparrow - one song sparrows - several dark-eyed junco - in the woods near the "feeder" neighbor northern cardinal red-winged blackbird eastern meadowlark - several singing heartily common grackles - some carrying nesting materials Margaret Bowman Licking Co., OH ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
