Most of my birding day was spent in Clermont County, with a little in the eastern part of Hamilton. I had to alter my plans somewhat, because of road closures from high water (Ohio River at 54ft today, flood stage is 52ft.) I started at home (Felicity, SE Clermont County) and drove south to Chilo Lock #34 Park, on the Ohio River, proceeded west on SR 52 with stops at the Meldahl Dam, the boat ramp at Neville, and Front St in New Richmond. I couldn't get to the ball fields on Kellogg Ave in Hamilton County: the road was closed at 5 Mile. Armleder Park on Wooster Pike was completely under water due to flooding from the Little Miami River. SR 32 was likewise closed just west of Newtown, so I couldn't get to the Turpin Sod Farms, where the Snowy Egret has been seen, but I was able to scope the (flooded) soccer fields and pick up the Caspian Terns. Heading back east on SR 32, I made a stop at Bethel-Concord Rd on the east side of East Fork State Park lake. That road also ends in water. I did get several FOS (First Of the Season) birds, 4 swallow species, and 6 warblers; total of 53 species on the day. Trip List: Pied-billed Grebe Double-crested Cormorant (22 flying over Chilo; FOS) Great Blue Heron Canada Goose Mallard Black Vulture Turkey Vulture Cooper's Hawk American Kestral Wild Turkey Killdeer Solitary Sandpiper (FOS) Caspian Tern (FOS) Mourning Dove Chimney Swift Belted Kingfisher Red-bellied Woodpecker Downy Woodpecker Eastern Kingbird (FOS) Purple Martin Tree Swallow N Rough-winged Swallow (FOS) Barn Swallow (FOS) Blue Jay American Crow Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse Carolina Wren Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Eastern Bluebird American Robin Northern Mockingbird European Starling Northern Parula Yellow Warbler Yellow-throated Warbler Prairie Warbler (FOS) N Waterthrush* (FOS) Common Yellowthroat (FOS) Northern Cardinal Indigo Bunting* (FOS) Eastern Towhee Chipping Sparrow Field Sparrow Savannah Sparrow* (FOS) Song Sparrow Red-winged Blackbird Eastern Meadowlark Common Grackle Brown-headed Cowbird House Finch American Goldfinch House Sparrow The * birds are my question marks. I heard what I thought was Savannah Sparrow at 3 different locations and Indigo Bunting at one, but couldn't find them to confirm. The Northern Waterthrush I based on habitat - next to standing water in a run-off ditch at Chilo. It didn't sing or offer any other behavioral clues, and I didn't see it long enough to study the field marks as well as I should have. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
