Arrived at 2:30 pm, met Sue Tackett & Charlotte Methena who told me about the Arctic Tern found by Jon Dunn in the far eastern Pond 27. Found the BNST in northwest corner of eastern pond & then with Ron Semper & John from 108 in shallow grassy pond to the north behind main east pond. Met Ron & John at eastern Pond 27, where we found 3 distant terns. I stayed with scope when Ron & John left. Found a longer winged tern with apparent deeper, slower wing beats with 2 Forster's Terns, then 3 more FOTE showed up. Longer winged tern had uniform gray upper wings/primaries, crisp dark tips to under side of primaries, long tail, & darker gray breast than FOTE. The head & bill seemed smaller, head projected less beyond front edge of wing. These are ID points for Arctic Tern. Some of these features were obsered as more people arrived from Magee--mother & son, Doreene Linzell, Dan Sanders, Joe Hammond, Rob & Ricki Lowery, Ben Warner, Joe H. & Bill. Did not get all names. Another tern made 7 & 3 more made 10. The all black bill, indicates not adult breeding plumage. See "Advanced Birding" by Kenn Kaufmann. Later heard FOTE calling & one Common Tern call, so there were COTE mixed in. Long wings with slow deeper wing beats of Arctic Tern gave more bouyant flight than FOTE. Maybe more later. Left at about 7:00 pm.
